GOOGLE EARTH GIS PROJECTS - READ ME! OR SETTLEMENT PROJECT: INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS All the necessary files that make up this OR Settlement Google Earth project are contained in the folder. For ease in downloading, the folder (with its associated subfolders) have been compressed and "zipped" together. To UNZIP: Use the standard decompression software that comes installed on the WinXP operating system. Right click on the downloaded folder and use the "Open With - Compressed (zipped) folders" command. SAVE THE ZIPPED FILE DIRECTLY ONTO YOUR C: DRIVE. If you do not have a decompression software on your operating system - use a standard program such as WinZip to decompress the project. ****************************** The folder structure of this project is as follows: - this folder contains the Google Earth compressed KMZ project file (*.kmz) and associated metadata and support documents. This is the PARENT FOLDER that will decompress. Within the Parent folder are various subfolders that contain the associated KML files, images and other data used in the project. WARNING!!!!!! Unzipped, the OR Settlement Google Earth project is 167mgs. This Google Earth project contains large raster images that have been converted to KMLs via the Tiles2KML software's "superoverlay" option (which creates a pyramid structure for speed in loading the images at various resolutions). THIS PROJECT DOES NOT HAVE RELATIVE PATHING (a feature not yet available using the superoverlay technique). You must unzip the parent folder DIRECTLY ONTO YOUR C: DRIVE or the project will not function properly. ****************************** OPEN THE GOOGLE EARTH PROJECT: Google Earth is a free plug-in from Google (it is not Google Maps). Download and install via the instructions at earth.google.com/download-earth.html. Open the Google Earth Project by launching the Google Earth program. Use the command in the menu bar to load the KMZ. Navigate to where you have stored the parent folder and click on it. Click on the file. The KMZ file will open in "My Temporary Places." Double-click on any one of the subfolders and the program will zoom into the proper area. A Getting to Know Google Earth Tutorial has been included in the project file to assist you in getting familiar with Google Earth's navigation tools and other features. GIS DATA: ArcGIS 9.3 and other software (such as Tiles2KML) have been used to convert the GIS data into KMLs. The original GIS data IS NOT packaged with the Google Earth projects. In most cases, you can retrieve the GIS data through the Teaching American History webpage (see information below). ****************************** For more information see the Teaching American History website's "Information on using GIS" resource document.
