The Senior Adult Learning Center (SALC) at Portland State University (PSU) is a vital and growing part of the lives of older adults in the Portland area. Founded in 1973 as a unit of the Institute on Aging, the Senior Adult Learning Center exists to enhance the quality of life of older adults through offering opportunities for continuous learning, intellectual enrichment, leadership, fellowship and personal growth within the University setting.

Tuition-Free Auditing Program for Oregon Seniors Aged 65 and Over

Oregon residents aged 65 and older may audit any of PSU’s regular classes on a space-available basis and pay no tuition. A few classes require materials fees that are paid at the Cashier’s office. There are no education level requirements. Auditors are welcome to take classes year-round, during Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer termsRegistration usually starts about one month before the beginning of the term.

SALC students can also receive a variety of other benefits, including free use of the PSU Library, computer access, a PSU internet account and email address, and access to PSU’s physical education facilities.

PSU’s Institute on Aging also sponsors the Retired Associates of PSU (RAPSU), a membership organization open to anyone who is 50 years of age or older. RAPSU members meet twice a month for programs of intellectual stimulation and fellowship.

How to Register?

The first step in registering is to decide which classes you want to take. Each term’s classes are listed in the PSU Bulletin, which can be purchased at the PSU Bookstore (1715 SW 5th Avenue Portland) for $1. It is also available online.

If you are registering for the first time, we request that you come into the SALC office to register. Please review the PSU Bulletin to identify some classes you would like to take, and then call the office at 503-725-4739 to find out about our opening hours. The SALC office is located in Room 470H of the Urban Center Building located at 506 S.W. Mill Street in downtown Portland between SW 5th and SW 6th Avenues and SW Mill and SW Montgomery Streets.

If you have taken classes through the SALC before, there is no need for you to come to the office to register. You may register online, by mailing your registration form, or by dropping your registration form in the mailbox in front of our office. All returning auditors will receive our quarterly SALC newsletter about a month before the beginning of a new term. The newsletter serves as a reminder that it is time to register, lists office hours, and includes a registration form.

Your registration will be processed within 5 business days. You will receive a yellow registration confirmation sheet, which lists your name, address, and the classes you signed up for. Please carry this sheet with you at all times when on the PSU campus. You can have your registration confirmation mailed to you, if you so elect, or it can be picked up at the message board outside the SALC office.

Once you have received your registration confirmation, you are ready for the start of the term. During the first week of classes, please go to class and introduce yourself to the instructor, telling them that you are a senior auditor. In the unlikely event that the class is full, please contact the SALC to select another class.

After you have confirmed that there is space for you, please go to the Cashier’s office (NH 178) to pay the class fee, if there is one listed in the PSU Bulletin. Please retain the receipt throughout the term; instructors and PSU staff may request to see it.

For more detailed information, please check our Frequently Asked Questions.
